The Heritage & History of the Former Levi Strauss & Co. Plant No. 549 (Roswell, New Mexico, U.S.A.)
The Levi Strauss & Co. manufacturing plant in Roswell, New Mexico, holds a distinct place in the history of American denim production, particularly among vintage archivists. Operated under the official internal factory code 549—which was stamped onto the back of the top buttons of its garments—the facility was established on the grounds of the former Walker Air Force Base. Following the base's closure in 1967, the site was repurposed into the Roswell Industrial Air Center. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Factory 549 was heavily utilized for its heavy-duty construction capabilities, producing a wide array of rugged garments ranging from traditional "Orange Tab" lines to durable corduroy. Most notably, this specific facility was chosen to manufacture the specialized 557 "For Cowboys" model. Designed specifically to meet the functional demands of rodeo riders and ranch hands, this variant featured modifications adapted for the saddle, such as a slightly higher rise, reinforced stitching at key stress points, and a leg opening tailored to accommodate western boots. The combination of the heavyweight raw denim and the rugged utility of the 557 pattern cemented the facility's reputation for producing some of the hardest-wearing denim in the company's domestic catalog.
The transition into the early 1990s marked a critical turning point for the Roswell operation and domestic textile manufacturing. As global trade dynamics shifted toward Asian outsourcing, Levi Strauss & Co. began restructuring its supply chain, leading to a phased reduction of its American manufacturing footprint starting around 1991. While the Roswell assembly lines did not halt completely until later in the decade, the early 90s signaled the end of an era for high-volume, military-base-derived domestic apparel production.
Today, garments bearing the 549 button stamp and the 557 "For Cowboys" designation remain highly sought-after artifacts representing the peak of twentieth-century Made in U.S.A. utilitarian design.

Levi Strauss & Co., the California Gold Rush era outfitter whose iconic blue jeans have been an American clothing staple for generations, closed its last two U.S. plants in San Antonio, Texas by the end of 2003.
By that time, more than 20 other U.S. plants had already been shut down.
Soon after, in March 2004, the last three Canadian facilities were closed as well, leaving no plants in North America. This marked the end of American-made Levi's denim, a history that began in the 1850s.
The most iconic Levi's denim factory, founded on Valencia Street in San Francisco, was closed in 2002. The building itself was sold in 2005.
