No other city captures the awe and wonder of the ancient Silk Road like Samarkand, once known as Marakanda in Sogdiana. This city of blue domes and minarets was the heart of Tamerlane’s empire. Welcome to Samarkand, dear guests!
Our tour begins at the Gur Emir Mausoleum, located in the southwestern part of Samarkand, built at the start of the 15th century. This stunning complex includes a khanaka, the madrasah of Muhammad Sultan (the grandson of Amir Timur), and later became the burial place for Amir Timur and his descendants.
Next, we’ll head to Registan Square, the symbol of Samarkand, where three famous madrasahs stand proudly—Ulugbek, Sher-Dor, and Tilla-Kori—each a testament to the architectural glory of the 15th to 17th centuries. Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch at a local favorite restaurant, known for its basic service, reasonable prices, and, without a doubt, the best plov in town. While sipping green tea and sampling traditional sweets like parwarda, we’ll continue to the Bibi Khanym Mosque, a magnificent site shrouded in a beautiful legend. It is said that Amir Timur ordered the construction of this mosque as a tribute to his beloved wife, Bibi Khanym.
Just a short walk away is the Siyab Bazaar, the largest oriental market in Samarkand. Here, the tradition of bargaining plays a central role, not just to lower prices, but as a centuries-old custom that defines the shopping experience.
Not far from the bazaar is the Shahi Zinda necropolis, or "Living King." This complex of mausoleums is home to the tomb of Kusam ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, who is said to have preached Islam in Samarkand before being martyred. Legend has it that, despite his death, he continued to live in a well located here.
To complete our journey, we’ll drive to the outskirts of Samarkand to visit two more remarkable sites: the Astronomical Observatory of Mirza Ulugbek and the Mausoleum of Khodja Doniyor, a revered pilgrimage site for Muslims, Christians, and Jews alike.
Additional places to visit upon request:
Silk paper production factory
Afrosiab Museum
Imam Al-Bukhari Complex
Wine tasting at an old winery
Samarkand Theatre of Historical Costumes
